Dear EHR Vendors,

I know your product development teams will be busy for years building out your software to meet the various certification specifications and other government mandates.  ICD-10 anyone?  So I know you are really not able to take ideas from the market on enhancements right now, so file this one away for the day when you finally get to respond to customers instead of regulators.

My mother-in-law lives half way across the country, is a widow, is closer to 90 than 80, and has several chronic conditions.  Her health and healthcare are a major topic of discussion between her and us. As you might guess, it is difficult for us to get the complete answer on what the doctor told her on one of her frequent visits.  So here is the enhancement idea...

Build a little summary of the visit (diagnosis, treatment plan instructions...something less than the CCR, but with the headlines) that the physician can text or email to a family member or two of the patient's choosing.

We want to help, even from afar.  Just a little information directly from the doctor will make us more effective.
